TOI’s AccordingAnnouncing the success of the initiative in Parliament, Communications Minister Devusinh Chauhan said 55.52 lakh connections were deactivated as a result of the verification process that identified fake documents. Apart from disconnections, 1.32 lakh handsets were also blocked for being involved in cybercrime and financial frauds, and 13.42 lakh suspicious connections reported by vigilant citizens were also disconnected.
The report states that the minister spoke about the government’s efforts to inform and educate consumers about the mobile connections registered in their name, saying that it is aimed at empowering individuals with knowledge and vigilance.
The widespread use of fake documents to obtain SIM cards has led to criminal activities such as financial fraud, phishing calls and identity theft. Using fake documents allows scammers to hide easily, making it difficult for the law to trace and catch the criminals.
