Google celebrating anniversary of 1829 patent of accordion with Doodle

Today’s Google Doodle is celebrating the anniversary of the accordion. It was patented on this day, i.e. 23 May, in the year 1829. The name of this instrument is derived from the German word Akkord, which means cord.

The accordion, which has had a profound impact on the world of music with its versatility, is honored in an animated doodle. This bellows-based free-reed instrument influenced many musical genres such as pop, jazz, folk and classical.

The instrument produces sound when the bellows expand and contract. It is a free-reed instrument, which means that the air flow vibrates the reeds inside the accordion to produce sound. A variety of free-reed instruments were created with bellows in the early 1800s, such as the concertina, bandoneon, and harmonium.

In the late 1800s, its growing popularity among folk musicians throughout Europe led manufacturers in Germany to increase accordion production. Early accordions had buttons on only one side, each button producing the sound of an entire chord. Interestingly, a single button could produce two different chords, once when the bellows were expanding and once when the bellows were contracting.

The accordion’s use in music grew as Europeans migrated around the world. Modern versions can be played with buttons or a piano-style keyboard, and some have both options. Sometimes they also include electronic elements so they can be plugged into an amplifier or tuned to create different sounds.

Today the instrument can be heard in folk music, Latino polka, tango, Cajun music and much more. The accordion is always present at Oktoberfest. There is so much to do with this melody maker in hand. The traditional sound continues to influence German celebrations and music around the world 200 years later.
