Tech Companies to block Advertisements of Illegal Loan, Betting Apps, Government Release Advisory

In the last few years, cases of fraud from illegal loan and betting apps have increased. Steps have been taken by the central government to curb these apps. In this connection, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has asked tech companies to block advertisements promoting illegal loan and betting apps.

Regarding this, the Ministry has Advisory Earlier, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had also given instructions to ban such apps. The advisory issued by the ministry said, “Intermediaries and platforms should take additional measures to not allow advertisements of illegal loan and betting apps that are likely to scam and confuse users.”

Along with this, the government has also taken a tough stand on making fake videos viral using Artificial Intelligence (AI). The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has asked social media and other intermediaries to ensure compliance with the existing IT rules. State Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Rajeev Chandrasekhar said that a formal advisory has been issued in this regard. It gives information about the processes that ensure that users on social media platforms do not violate the content banned under Rule 3 (1) (b). He said, “If information or reports of such violations are received, action will be taken under the law.” He said that the ministry will strictly monitor the compliance of these rules by intermediaries.

This advisory states that users should be given clear information about the content that is not allowed under IT rules. Last month Facebook And YouTube was warned by the central government about deepfakes. Social media platforms including Facebook and YouTube were told that under the country’s law, posting deepfakes and content that spreads obscenity or misinformation is prohibited. This warning was given to these companies in a meeting. Regarding this, Chandrashekhar had said that many social media companies have not updated the terms and conditions for their users despite the rules implemented last year.
