China Preparing for Nuclear Weapons Test, Satellite Images Give Indication

In an effort to compete with and dominate the US, China is busy increasing its military power. In this context, there are indications of China preparing to conduct a nuclear test in Lop Nur of Xinjian Autonomous Region. Satellite images indicate that this test can be conducted soon.

Babiarz, a former analyst of the US Defense Department Pentagon, has studied satellite images of China’s Lop Nur test area for many years. China conducted its first nuclear test in this area in October 1964.

The report said, “This activity of China is happening at a delicate time in its relations with America. President Joe Biden said in a meeting with China’s top leader Xi Xinping last month that he is trying to strengthen these relations.” However, China has denied this report. It said that it has no basis. In the last few years, satellite images of Lop Nur have shown many changes in this area. According to the New York Times report, “Till a few years ago, it was a site with some old buildings, but now a modern complex has been built there, which is surrounded by security.”

These satellite images also revealed the construction of a new airbase in this area. Apart from this, a drilling rig about 90 feet high is also present. A report by the Middlebury Institute of International Studies states that China’s increase in the strength of its missiles indicates its move towards nuclear weapons. It had about 50 intercontinental ballistic missiles till a little over a decade ago. It is preparing to increase this number to more than 1,000 missiles in the next few years. About half of these missiles could be equipped with nuclear capable launchers.
