TOI’s AccordingCCTV installed inside the house of a Mumbai-based YouTuber was hacked and the hackers then shared objectionable videos of the YouTuber and other family members inside the house on the internet. When the YouTuber saw the explicit footage of himself on the internet, he filed a complaint with the Bandra police. The incident came to light when an unknown person hacked the closed-circuit television (CCTV) system installed at the YouTuber’s Bandra (West) residence.
In the video, the YouTuber was seen coming out of the toilet without clothes, while his mother and sister were also seen in the background. The incident took place on November 17, following which the Bandra police had to collaborate with its cyber team to trace the Internet Protocol (IP) address and identify the person responsible for the illegal intrusion. Apart from this, a request has also been made to remove these video footages spread in various social media networks.
According to the report, the YouTuber is also active in esports. He came to know about the video leak when a friend informed him about it on Saturday. In his formal complaint, he said, “An unknown person has illegally accessed the CCTV camera installed in my bedroom. The video has been widely shared on Instagram, Telegram and other social media platforms.”
Officers are looking into the possibility of whether someone known to the YouTuber had gained unauthorised access to the CCTV system. The complainant took action after two friends recognised his mother and sister in the footage.
The incident has resulted in a case being filed under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including defamation, and the Information Technology Act. The charges include identity theft, breach of trust and dissemination of sexually explicit content. At the moment, the identity of the accused person remains unknown.
If you also have a CCTV camera installed in your house, then you should keep these things in mind:-
- Use a strong password made up of letters, numbers, and special characters for your CCTV camera system.
- Give access to cameras only to selected people in the house.
- If the video is being saved in the cloud, ensure the credentials used to log in to the cloud are strong and also enable two-factor authentication there.
- Avoid downloading any unauthorized files from the Internet on your smartphone with the CCTV app installed, as it may cause malware on the smartphone and give hackers access to your phone or app.
