Apple Unveiled macOS Sequoia With Support for iPhone Mirroring Passwords App at WWDC 2024

Apple on Monday introduced macOS Sequoia as a new version of its desktop operating system for Mac computers at WWDC 2024. The macOS Sonoma update will be released for Mac models later this year, including iPhone mirroring, a password app that works on the company’s devices as well as Windows computers. Meanwhile, Apple’s Safari browser is getting the ability to automatically expand web pages using machine learning technology. The macOS 15 update will be released for Mac computers later this year.

With macOS Sequoia, Apple is bringing support for iPhone mirroring that will allow users to wirelessly access their smartphone directly from the computer screen. According to the company, the feature will work even when the smartphone is away and the screen is locked. Apple also says that notifications from the iPhone will be mirrored on macOS Sequoia and users can interact with them to open the app and interact with it without picking up their smartphone.

Apple Intelligence, the company’s on-device artificial intelligence system based on the Neural Engine, will also offer new features on compatible Mac computers later this year. This includes a more powerful Siri that can work inside apps, proofread and rewrite text in apps, and create photos through Image Playground. Apple’s Photos app is also getting an AI upgrade, including the ability to create videos from photos with prompts.

The upcoming macOS Sequoia update will enable third-party window tiling management such as Magnet and BetterSnapTool, with basic support for the same function, nearly 25 years after the first version of Apple’s desktop operating system was released. Meanwhile, the Messages app will add support for emoji and sticker tapback reactions, just like in iOS 18.

Apple macOS is also upgrading the Photos app on Sequoia with support for showing collections based on multiple themes, while giving users access to better search results, including content inside videos. The Apple Notes app will transcribe audio and expand on notes using Apple intelligence.

The company has also announced several new features powered by Apple Intelligence such as Image Playground, text proofreading and rephrasing, and summary generation that will only be available on Mac models running on Apple Silicon. It limits support to computers with M1, M2, or M3 chips. According to the company, both the on-device Apple Intelligence and Private Cloud Compute features are designed to protect users’ privacy while enabling AI features on devices.
