Social media platform X (formerly Twitter) has banned more than 2 lakh accounts in India last month. Out of these, more than 2500 accounts were banned for promoting terrorism. The company has banned these accounts following the IT Rules 2021. The company had also received complaints from Indian users about suspicious accounts. It has been said that 3,229 complaints were received by the company during the stated period.

Apart from this, action was taken on 78 such complaints by X in which there was an appeal to suspend the account.

Before this X In the month of August, 5,57,764 accounts were banned in India. These accounts were banned between 26 August and 25 September. During this time also, the company had told that 1675 accounts were banned because they were promoting terrorist activities.

According to the new IT rules 2021, social media platforms having more than 50 lakh subscribers will have to submit their monthly compliance report. In this report, the platform will have to give details of what action the company took to maintain the safety of users and run the platform cleanly, how many complaints were received, and how many complaints were acted upon.

The platform is planning to charge users an annual fee. X has said that it is going to charge users a fee of $1 every year under a new subscription model. This fee will have to be paid for posting content, replying, liking and reposting. The new subscription model has been named ‘Not A Bot’. Those who create a new account on Twitter will have to pay money. Users who do not pay will only be able to read the content. X argues that by doing this it wants to deal with bots and spammers.
