Google removes Indian Matrimony Apps from Playstore Over Fee Dispute

Google removed the apps of 10 Indian companies including several dating apps from the Play Store. Popular apps like Bharat Matrimony are also included in this. These apps have been removed due to the ongoing dispute over Play Store’s service fee payments. Google says that the apps are not following the billing policy. Giving an example, the company said that more than 2 lakh Indian apps follow the billing policy but these 10 apps are not doing so.

Google has also posted a blog post regarding the removal of these apps from Google Play Store. In which it is written that the apps were given more than 3 years to prepare for the billing policy. But even after the Supreme Court’s order, the apps are not following the policy. After which three weeks have passed. The company has removed many famous apps from Google Play Store. These apps include Kuku FM, Bharat Matrimony, Shaadi.com, Naukri.com, 99 acres, Truly Madly, Quack Quack, Stage, ALT (Alt Balaji). After this action, the reaction of the app owners has also come. Kuku FM CEO Chand Bisu has called Google a bad company. Bisu said that Google is a very bad company in terms of business. It controls the entire startup system of India. In 2019, the company removed the app from the Play Store for 25 days without notice.

Shaadi.com founder Anupam Mittal wrote from his social media handle that this is a black day for the Indian Internet. Google has removed many big apps from the Play Store, while the legal hearing is still going on in this matter. On the other hand, the court also ruled in favor of Google. The petition filed by the app owners challenging the billing policy in the court was rejected by the court. After that, the petition of the apps reached the Supreme Court. But the Supreme Court did not issue any final order and extended the hearing to March 9.

Google is actually charging 11% to 26% fees on Indian startups for in-app payments. Dating apps like Bharat Matrimony, Christian Matrimony, Muslim Matrimony and Jodii were deleted by Google on Friday. After which the shares of Matrimony.com fell by 2.7 percent. At the same time, the shares of Info Edge fell by 1.5%. The company is ruling the Indian market because 94 percent of the phones in the Indian market depend on its Android platform.
