Pakistan Former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) was to hold a virtual rally yesterday. It was to start at 9 pm. But before that, social media platforms went down in Pakistan. Due to this, people are facing problems in using online platforms.
Internet monitoring agency Netblocks said in a statement that in Pakistan, X, Facebook, Instagramsocial media platforms including YouTube went down. According to the agency, this happened just before the virtual rally. Users started facing problems in accessing social media platforms after 8 pm in Lahore, Karachi, Islamabad. Also, according to Dawn, users also complained of slow internet.
PTI took a dig at this incident saying that this was done due to the fear of the party and its increasing popularity. At the same time, Pakistan’s Telecommunication Authority (PTA) did not issue any reaction to this incident. Let us tell you that after the arrest of Imran Khan on May 9, protests started in Pakistan. Due to which PTA had shut down internet services in the country. Earlier in July, Pakistan was ranked third in the list of countries imposing the most internet restrictions in the world. This ranking was done for the first half of 2023. Apart from this, in another report in May, Pakistan was described as the most backward country in terms of internet use and promotion of digital services. In 2022, Pakistan was found to be at the bottom of the world in terms of internet availability and digital governance. That is, the reach of internet to the population here is still not very high, and at the same time internet technology is not being used much in government work.
