a man named Raj Bhagat told news agency Bhasha (via NDTV) that on the intervening night of February 3 and 4, at around 1.30 am, his father was looking for his berth and arranging his luggage in the Nagarcoil-Kacheguda Express train when he lost his bag, which contained the phone.
After about two hours, his father realized that the bag was missing. When the bag was not found after a lot of searching, he informed his son Raj Bhagat about this from another passenger’s phone.
Bhagat told the agency that his family shares location with each other and he found his father’s phone’s location on the railway line near Melappalayam in Tirunelveli. Bhagat used the data and maps to catch the thief.
“So, I guessed that the thief got down at Tirunelveli junction and was returning to Nagercoil by another train,” he said.
Bhagat decided to chase the thief along with one of his friends. He said, “We stopped on the way and informed a railway police constable about the incident and took him along with us.”
Bhagat said, “But from his movements on the map, I guessed that he had gone out of the main gate of the station and boarded a bus going towards Anna Bus Station. So, we started following the bus on a motorcycle.”
He told that finally he got down at Anna Bus Stand.
Bhagat said, “On Google Maps, I could see his location only two meters away. Then I saw him in front of me with my father’s bag. After that, we surrounded him with the help of people around.”
Bhagat further told PTI, “This whole incident went on for two hours. When I saw the thief standing in front of me with my father’s bag, I cannot tell you how happy I was.”
The thief was later taken to the police station, where it was found that he was a habitual offender. The police recovered from him all the things stolen that day – phone charger, Bluetooth earphones, lock and key, Rs 1,000 cash, etc.
