It has the capacity to transmit data at 1.2 terabits (1,200 gigabits) per second, which surpasses the 100 gigabits per second standard for most of the world’s Internet backbone networks by a large margin. Even the United States’ recent upgrade to fifth-generation Internet2 operates at 400 gigabits per second.
The achievement is part of China’s ambitious Future Internet Technology Infrastructure initiative, a decade-long project and the latest development of the national China Education and Research Network (CERNET). Activated in July and officially launched recently, the network has not only passed all operational tests but has also proven to be highly reliable.
Wang Lei, vice president of Huawei Technologies, highlighted the speed of the network, saying it can transfer data equivalent to 150 high-definition movies in just one second. Wu Jianping, FITI project leader from the Chinese Academy of Engineering, described the superfast line as not only a successful operation but also providing advanced technology to create an even faster internet for China.
Comparing the new internet backbone to a superfast train track, Xu Mingwei of Tsinghua University explained that it replaces the need for 10 regular tracks to carry the same amount of data. This makes it a more cost-effective and manageable system, marking a significant leap in internet technology for China.
