Smartphone Shipments in India Increase 7 Percent in H1 of Current Year, Apple, Vivo, Samsung, Xiaomi

The demand for smartphones in the country has grown rapidly in the last few years. In the first half of this year, smartphone shipments grew by 7.2 percent year-on-year to around 69 million units. In the second quarter of the current year, smartphone shipments grew by about 3.2 percent to around 35 million units.

Market research firm International Data Corporation (IDC) Report According to, many new smartphones have been launched in the second quarter. Most of these were in the mid-premium and premium segments. However, shipments of entry-level smartphones (priced less than Rs 8,400) declined by 36 percent year-on-year in the second quarter. The market share of these segments has come down from 22 percent in the same quarter last year to around 14 percent. Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi has the highest share in this segment. It is followed by Poco and Realme.

Shipments in the budget segment of smartphones (priced around Rs 8,400 to Rs 16,800) grew by around 8 per cent on a year-on-year basis. Xiaomi is also at the forefront in this segment, followed by Realme and Vivo. The entry-premium segment (priced around Rs 16,800 to Rs 33,500) saw the highest growth of 42 per cent. Chinese smartphone maker Oppo is at the forefront in this, followed by Vivo and Samsung. Shipments in the mid-premium segment of smartphones (priced around Rs 33,500 to Rs 50,400) declined by around 25 per cent on a year-on-year basis. The market share of this segment has declined from around 5 per cent in the same quarter last year to around 4 per cent. Vivo has the highest market share of around 25 per cent in this. Followed by OnePlus and Oppo.

In the second quarter, shipments in the premium segment of smartphones (priced around Rs 50,400 to Rs 67,100) declined by about 37 percent. In this segment, American devices maker Apple is at the forefront. It is followed by South Korea’s Samsung. Shipments in the super-premium segment (price more than Rs 67,100) grew by about 22 percent on a year-on-year basis. Apple has the highest share of about 83 percent in this. The company’s iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus have received good response from customers. Samsung is in second place with 16 percent market share.
